Cecilia Nyman
Project Coordinator PROTECT BALTIC
HELCOM
Helsinki, Finland
I work for the project PROTECT BALTIC at the HELCOM Secretariat. My role is to coordinate, supervise and support the overall implementation of the project.
About me
Ms Cecilia Nyman, Project Coordinator for Protect Baltic at the HELCOM Secretariat, holds a PhD in biology with a background in ecology and evolution. Her PhD thesis focused on studying the effects of the early social environment on behavioural and genomic responses in highly social cichlid fish. She possesses expertise in Baltic Sea ecology, evolutionary ecology, sustainable development, hazardous substances, and endocrine disruptors. Before joining the HELCOM Secretariat, she worked at an NGO as an expert and later as a project manager on various environmental projects.
My organisation
The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission - Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) is an intergovernmental organization (Denmark, Estonia, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) with its headquarters (Secretariat) in Helsinki, Finland, working to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. This work includes measures to limit impact of human activities on the marine environment and spatial protection measures such as marine protected areas (MPAs). HELCOM considers MPAs an important environmental management tool to support the conservation of marine biological diversity, habitats, ecosystems, and the processes they host, as well as resources in a broad sense.
