70 years of catalysis "know how" forms the basis of the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT Rostock). The "Institute for Catalysis Research", forerunner of LIKAT Rostock, was founded in Rostock in 1952 - as the first research institute in Europe exclusively dedicated to catalysis.

Today, the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis is one of the largest publicly funded research institutes in the field of applied catalysis in Europe.

By using high-performance catalysts, chemical reactions take place in a resource-saving manner while increasing yield, avoiding by-products and reducing specific energy requirements.

Efficient use of all resources is only possible with successful catalysis research. Already, four out of five chemical products undergo a catalytic cycle during their production. In addition to their use in chemistry, catalytic applications are increasingly being found in the life sciences and for energy supply, as well as in climate and environmental protection.
