In Batteries, LEITAT manages a vast portfolio of over 25 EU battery projects, focusing on recycling both primary and secondary streams. Their work spans multiple stages, starting with raw material recycling from mines, utilizing selective recovery membranes for metal recovery and mine waste processing. The End-of-Life (EoL) Pack Assessment phase involves electrical evaluation of battery packs, modules, or cells to determine whether they should be sorted, deactivated, repaired, reused, or recycled. The Smart Disassembly stage employs collaborative robotics and AI, along with additive manufacturing and prototyping, to enhance disassembly tools and optimize pack design for recyclability. Through Digitalization, they leverage digital twins to track manufacturing, recycling, and second-life applications, as well as manage production scraps. In Pre-mechanical treatment, advanced optical sorting methods (coupled with AI) are used to separate high-purity black mass efficiently. Hydrometallurgy plays a crucial role, utilizing a wide array of chemical, electrochemical, and membrane technologies for processes such as leaching, separation, and pCAM recovery. Lastly, their Battery Assessment capabilities include synthesis of cathode active materials (CAM), ink and electrode manufacturing, solid and liquid electrolyte development, cell assembly, and various characterizations covering electrical, thermal, mechanical, and post-mortem analyses. LEITAT operates through multiple facilities, including LEITAT-Palau Solità i Plegamans, LEITAT-Terrassa, and the LEITAT Factory in Barcelona, further strengthening their presence in battery technology research and recycling.
