About

1. Brief description of our idea or research results

S2AQUAcolab would like to submit a proposal which consider an integrated approach to diversify and enhance aquaculture production in the EU, focusing on low-trophic species (invertebrates, seaweeds, etc) and sustainable farming practices such as Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) and alternative feed ingredients. The goal is to develop innovative solutions that increase the sector’s competitiveness, reduce environmental impact, and improve consumer acceptance. This aligns with the EU’s strategic guidelines for sustainable aquaculture, promoting circularity, zero waste, and resilient food systems. Our initiative will also address regulatory challenges and market barriers, fostering knowledge transfer and the adoption of these sustainable practices by industry partners.

2. Details of type and role of partners sought

Possible partners could be:

  • Aquaculture industry stakeholders (producers, feed companies, technology providers) to co-develop and test innovative production methods and feed formulations.

  • Research institutions with expertise in marine biology, fish health, genetics, and circular economy to contribute scientific knowledge and sustainability assessments.

  • Social sciences and market experts to study consumer acceptance, regulatory frameworks, and economic feasibility.

  • Policy and governance entities to address regulatory barriers and promote science-based policies for sustainable aquaculture.

  • Partners to foster knowledge exchange and enhance global competitiveness.

 3. Brief outline of your previous experience in R&D&I projects

S2AQUAcolab has extensive experience in research, development, and innovation projects focused on sustainable aquaculture. We have participated in several EU and nationally funded projects addressing IMTA, alternative feed sources, and ecosystem-based approaches. Our team collaborates with industry partners, policymakers, and researchers to bridge the gap between science and market application. Recent projects include advancements in seaweed and shellfish farming and novel feed formulations (functional diets) using circular economy principles for improved aquaculture efficiency.
