Session 15: Streets for People: The Transformative Power of Active Mobility
- Stream 1: Climate-neutral and resilient mobility
Active mobility is the most fundamental form of mobility – the most suitable and sustainable for most travel over short distances and the basis for access to public transport. How are cities transforming streets so active mobility can move from being considered “alternative transport” to the most essential transport?
This session will showcase various approaches taken to foster walking, cycling, and rolling – including infrastructure, innovative services, and behavioural nudging – in diverse CIVITAS projects and communities, from metropolitan cities to suburban towns and administrative capitals to touristic islands. Through case studies and discussion, experts will delve into strategies that successfully integrate active mobility into the urban fabric, creating safe, accessible, vibrant spaces for people. Along the way, speakers will explore some of the numerous benefits of active mobility – to the environment, public health, social inclusivity, and more – and how these impacts can be measured, understood, and effectively communicated to the public.
