Closing Plenary: When Europe Cycles: From Declaration to Action
The European Declaration on Cycling was adopted in April 2024. What needs to be done next to translate the enthusiasm surrounding this historic milestone into tangible change? How can the urban mobility community deliver on the full potential of cycling in the EU? If the Declaration is a strategic compass, where does it point us, and what do we need – in practical terms – to reach its destination?
This session will explore the current landscape of cycling in Europe and the path to becoming a continent of cities and towns that cycle. Plans, policies, and strategies at all levels of government recognise the myriad benefits of cycling – for sustainability, inclusivity, health, well-being, efficiency, economy, and more. They also recognise the fundamental importance of supportive infrastructure to enable the widespread adoption of cycling as an essential mode of transport. Panellists will discuss the roles of national agencies, local authorities, researchers, innovators, and other stakeholders in transforming cities and towns into safe, accessible, joyful places for people to cycle.
