Energy Central System

Raoof Gholami

Professor at University of Stavanger

About

The University of Stavanger (UiS) has built an energy central system for the local heating and cooling supply based on geothermal energy. This system distributes waterborne heating and cooling to 110 000 m² of the 140 000 m² of UiS' total building stock, via a pre-installed piping network. Heating and cooling will be provided by two ground source heat pumps with a total capacity of 2600 kW, which are connected to 119 shallow geothermal wells drilled up to 300 m. In conjunction with these wells, an energy central building has been built with an approximate size of 2,100 square metres distributed over four floors. The first and second floors are built for the expansion of the heating and cooling system. On the third floor, an operation hub will be set up to record and monitor data including temperatures, pressures, and heat flow in different wells
