About
Open Thor Living Lab offers a state-of-the-art infrastructure as backbone for the integration of open innovation in a real life setting to accelerate the energy transition. Geographically, the Open Thor Living Lab is equally a unique location to stimulate and valorise initiatives. The Open Thor Living Lab includes the Thor science and business park, the New Texas social housing estate, the adjacent Waterschei garden suburbs, and the buildings and training complexes of KRC Genk.
About Open Thor Living Lab
Open Thor Living Lab is a former coal mining site that has been converted into a sustainable research and business park, focusing on sustainable energy and smart manufacturing.
Recently, Open Thor Living Lab has established the state-of-the-art infrastructure with a low temperature network, a PV outdoor test field, smart chargers, AC/DC networks, testbed dwellings and collective energy solutions for residential dwellings. An energy hub will be installed combining different energy sources allowing companies to plug in their energy solutions. All data are gathered in the SmarThor cloud platform.
This, together with the presence of the EnergyVille research institute using Thor Park as a living lab, makes it an ideal environment for experiments on energy communities.
