Reporting Nanoparticle Tracers (RNT) - Next generation smart tracers for characterization of underground reservoirs
About
RNT is a novel approach for enhanced and accurate reservoir exploration developed and patented in the labs of Prof. Schimmel at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It is based on synthetic multi-layered nanoparticles with an elaborate structure that includes reference and reporting functions alongside a stimuli-responsive threshold activation mechanism. Unlike traditional tracer molecules, the RNTs can be modified to detect various reservoir parameters and work at diverse reservoir conditions with different rock layers and fluids. Test results are obtained onsite in real-time and can be fully interpreted quickly, without the need for complex calculations and modelling.
As a part of a Call Module 7 project (Geothermal energy technologies, identification and assessment of geothermal resources) we would provide the solution for advanced tracer testing, determining flow paths and rates as well as reservoir conditions such as the maximum temperatures along specific flow paths. These tests could be crucial in the exploration and development stages of geothermal resource and provide an efficient and accurate monitoring tool once it is operational. One of the advantages of the Reporting Nanoparticle Tracers system is that it is modular and adjustable. We will develop, modify and adapt our smart tracers for exploration of a specific geothermal site. We can then run preparatory small-scale lab tests using rock and fluid samples from the site to ensure good performance of the tracers and optimize detection and sensitivity before starting with the field tests.
