The Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) develops and carries out the European Commission's policies on maritime affairs and fisheries. DG MARE works to ensure that the ocean resources are used sustainably and that coastal communities and the fishing sector have a prosperous future; promote maritime policies and stimulate a sustainable blue economy; and promote ocean governance at international level. The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides independent, evidence-based science and knowledge, supporting EU policies to positively impact society. The EU Blue Economy Observatory, a joint platform managed by the DG MARE and the JRC, analyses socio-economic components of the marine and maritime related sectors. It provides a detailed picture of ocean-related activities, with latest socio-economic data, scientific evidence, insights, market information and findings supporting ongoing trends and developments in the EU Blue Economy.
