The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) is the European Commission’s marine in-situ data service, owned by the EC Directorate-General of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (EC DG MARE) and funded by the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund. EMODnet as a trusted source of in situ marine environmental and human activities data and data products, plays a pivotal role serving a diverse user base across various sectors. The EMODnet Portal (emodnet.ec.europa.eu) is a single access point to all EMODnet services, providing easy and free access to a wealth of marine data, metadata, and data products. Covering seven disciplinary themes – bathymetry, geology, physics, chemistry, biology, seabed habitats and human activities – EMODnet spans the entire marine environment from coast to open ocean, surface to deep seafloor. In collaboration with over 120 partner organizations and stakeholders, EMODnet aggregates data into Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) pan-European data layers, with data and accompanying metadata harmonized according to EU standards and following the requirements of the INSPIRE directive. In addition, EMODnet experts produce unique data products such as the EUSeaMap, a broad-scale seabed habitat map, the EU Digital Terrain Model for harmonized bathymetry, and the pan-European Marine Litter Database. EMODnet caters to a broad users community, including the private sector and Blue Economy, national authorities and administrators, research and academia, non-governmental organizations, and citizen science initiatives

About me

I am a marine professional with a PhD in marine science (ocean biogeochemistry) and expertise in ocean observation and marine data. I have more than a decade of experience working at the science-policy-industry-society interface in the European marine and maritime community. I joined the EMODnet Secretariat as Deputy Head in January 2019 and in April 2023 I became the Head of Secretariat.

My organisation

The European Marine Observation and Data Network is the EC marine in situ data service of DG MARE. EMODnet is a public service providing free and open access to pan-European high resolution data layers and data products on key ocean environmental parameters and human activities at sea.

EMODnet experts from over 120 organisations source, assemble, harmonise and standardize data from Europe’s in situ ocean observation capability to provide pan European data, metadata and data layers that are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) according to European e.g., INSPIRE, and International e.g., ISO standards, also offering data and web services according to OGC standards and more.

The EMODnet Portal is a unified service offering multidisciplinary marine data and information from a common map viewer and central metadata catalogue, making EMODnet data interoperable across the full offer, also enabling EMODnet to be harvested by other services including global ocean data initiatives e.g., Ocean Data Information System (ODIS) and the Group on Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). EMODnet has a large and diverse user-base including policy and public administration, research and academia, the private sector and society to support EU policy (Maritime Spatial Planning, Marine Strategy Framework Directive, EU Green Deal), European research and innovation projects and the European Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters, the Blue Economy, conservation, management and more.

EMODnet works in close partnership with the Copernicus Marine Service to provide complementary marine data services for Europe and beyond, and in the EDITO infrastructure project developing the marine data infrastructure backbone to the European Digital Twin Ocean (DTO).
