About me

Dr. Nikolaos P. Ventikos (male) is an Associate Professor in the Laboratory for Maritime Transport at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NA&ME) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. He is also the Head of the Maritime Risk Group (MRG). He holds a diploma from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of NTUA and a PhD from NTUA in the scientific areas of ship generated oil pollution, risk analysis/assessment and marine safety. Dr Ventikos’ expertise is in marine safety; risk engineering; environmental engineering; human factors/engineering; human centered design; resilience engineering; salvage engineering; skills development; port operations; maritime sustainability; and statistical modelling. During his presence at NTUA, he has participated in several major research projects in the areas of fleet/ship generated pollution, environmental protection and antipollution operations, marine safety, maritime transport and systems, marine salvage, safety analysis and technology assessment. Dr Ventikos was awarded the G.P. Livanos Grand Prize on Environmental Issues sponsored by the Hellenic Nautical Chamber (2000), his Ph.D. dissertation was nominee for the Environmental Award sponsored by the Union of Greek Shipowners (2002) and he is an active faculty member of the Laboratory for Maritime Transport of NTUA, which was awarded the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Award for the Piraeus International Centre (2008) and the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Award on Achievement in Safety or Environmental Protection (2010). Dr Ventikos has published significant parts of his work in peer reviewed journals such as the Marine Pollution Bulletin, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Ocean Engineering, Journal of Risk Research, WMU Journal of Maritime Affairs, Maritime Policy and Management, Marine Technology, Safety Science, Reliability Engineering & System Safety, Human and Ecological Risk Assessment etc. He has given more than 110 lectures at various international scientific conferences and symposia with topics relevant to his expertise. Dr Ventikos’ mother language is Greek, and he is very fluent in, English and French; he has also basic knowledge of Arabic.
