Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK Fraunhofer IPK is a research and development institution in the field of production technology in Berlin. With our distinctive IT competence, we offer system solutions, individual technologies and services for digitally integrated production. We provide comprehensive support to companies along the entire value chain: from product development, planning and control of machines and systems, including technologies for parts manufacturing, to comprehensive automation and management of factory operations. We also transfer production engineering solutions to areas of application outside industry, such as traffic and safety. In our five business divisions Corporate Management, Virtual Product Creation, Production Systems, Ultra- and High-Precision Technology, Joining and Coating Technology as well as Automation Technology, we also promote current topics that are of particular interest to a broad spectrum of industry partners on an interdisciplinary basis. The Ultra- and High-Precision Technology division has intense expertise in machining and in particular thermal machining, industrial metrology and the replication of highly complex plastic components. Additionally there is in-depth know-how in the field of biotechnology and its application in the production context. The IPK has been conducting research in this interdisciplinary field for 15 years. The laboratories of the Division include two laboratorys for high- and ultra precision machining, a bio-laboratory of safety level 2 according to BioStoffV and safety level 1 according to GenTSV, as well as two ISO 7 clean rooms, which are located at the IPK's Application Centre for Microproduction Technology. The Department Bio and Pharmaceutical Production Technology offers intense knowledge on: The production of biodegradable plastic (PHB) from biogenic waste streams (fermentation) and its application (3D printing, injection moulding)., The encapsulation and formulation of nanoparticles for drug delivery (lipid nanoparticles, PLGA Nanoparticles, ...)., Development of antimicrobial strategies in different applications (medicine, production facilities) via mechanical, physical and chemical approaches.
