About

Thinking in Circles

In recent decades, economic activity has largely been shaped by the traditional concept of a linear economy – a system whose business models have tended to ignore both the finite nature of natural resources and producers’ responsibility for their products beyond the point of sale. The consequences of this "take-make-waste" approach are devastating: climate change, overexploitation of natural resources, and loss of biodiversity are just some of the negative effects. Transforming this economic system and adapting existing business models have therefore become key challenges for our society and economy.

The concept of the circular economy offers a promising alternative: circular economic systems and business models are designed to keep products, resources, materials, and energy in use for as long as possible. In addition to promoting a more responsible use of natural resources, this approach opens up new value creation opportunities for companies – such as repair services, extended product offerings, or upcycling. Transitioning to circular models also positively impacts cost structures, as the use of expensive primary resources can often be reduced significantly.

The Certificate Programme in Circular Economy & Innovation equips participants with the practical knowledge needed to understand the circular economy as a whole and apply its principles strategically and conceptually within their own contexts. Graduates of this programme gain up-to-date and distinctive expertise in circular economy practices – going far beyond traditional waste management and recycling topics. They also learn to identify the high innovation potential that circular strategies can offer businesses.

This certificate programme combines transdisciplinary knowledge acquisition with a strong practical orientation. It provides a comprehensive overview of the latest academic insights as well as current regulatory and legal frameworks.
