About

Sea Technology's innovation, "The Sea Tech Floating Terminal (STFT)," is an innovative floating terminal designed for large-scale container transshipment, capable of handling 5-6 million TEU annually. The STFT is revolutionizing the somewhat constrained transportation system and positively impacting the growing blue economy. The development of floating port terminals is driven by global trade's need for efficient logistics hubs. Currently, only about 20 ports worldwide can accommodate the ultra-large container ships, which are increasing in size, leading to a highly strained supply chain. Our solution, for instance, involves positioning an STFT off the coast of Gothenburg and redirecting 25% of container traffic from the Port of Rotterdam to this STFT. This could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 70%, significantly lowering the climate impact while protecting sensitive ecosystems, and notably enhancing trade and capacity.

Financial and environmental costs of port congestion are based on industry reports and studies that examine the operational effects of delays in global maritime shipping. Operating costs for large container ships vary between $30,000 and $100,000 per day, depending on size. Research indicates that an idle ship burns between 80 to 100 tons of heavy oil per day, generating approximately 3.15 tons of CO2 per ton of fuel. Delays in port areas lead to significant emissions of CO2, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen oxides. The STFT offers an efficient solution to capacity and energy challenges.
