Breakout A - Ignite Talk

Location:Plenary Hall - LeibnizTrack:Diversity and regional development

Theme: Demographic Change in Structurally Weak Regions
Featuring: Prof. Dr Stefan Zundel
The Lausitz Science Park in Cottbus, Germany, stands as a prime example of how innovation, research, and regional development can be driven forward in structurally weak regions. Led by Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus-Senftenberg, the park is going to be a hub for both applied and fundamental research, innovative start-ups, and business partnerships.

The park’s main objective is to make the Lausitz region a nationally and internationally visible and attractive innovation hotspot, focusing particularly on electromobility research with an emphasis on hybrid-electric drive technologies.

This session will use the Lausitz Science Park as a case study to discuss how science parks can contribute to regional value creation and economic revitalisation. It will explore successful models of collaboration between research institutions and businesses, as well as strategies for fostering innovation and employment in underdeveloped regions.

The potential for cooperation with Lakeside Park is a central focus, particularly following the recent signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two regions. This partnership opens up opportunities for cross-border research collaborations, knowledge exchange, and joint initiatives that could strengthen both regions in the face of demographic change, while also boosting innovation and economic growth.
