Project idea:

This project aims to develop user-centric and interoperable Web 4.0 architecture that is fully aligned with European values. The targeted architecture will be designed to ensure that users have full control over their own data and identities across the core elements of digital life, including digital identity, data sharing, communication, media, and virtual world interactions.

Within the scope of the project, individuals will be identified through WebID and the EUDI Wallet, while their personal data, preferences, and content will be stored in user-controlled data vaults based on the Solid Pod infrastructure. File and media sharing will be conducted in a decentralized and verifiable manner through the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). Furthermore, open and federated protocols such as Matrix and ActivityPub will be used for messaging and content platforms.

Through five innovative use cases, the project will test the architecture’s capabilities in:

• Logging into different digital platforms with the same identity,

• Integration with a federated messaging infrastructure,

• Recommendation systems based on personal preferences,

• IPFS-based digital document verification systems, and

• Portable profile/avatar management across virtual worlds.

The components to be developed will be shared under open-source licenses and will contribute to the development of digital commons across Europe. The project will be structured to fully comply with eIDAS 2.0, GDPR, and the EU Declaration on Digital Rights. Moreover, different data hosting models will be developed for public institutions, private companies, and individuals to ensure sustainability and reusability.

In this way, the project will contribute to the Europe-centric development of Web 4.0 and serve as a guiding example for open, transparent, secure, and federated digital infrastructures—offering an alternative to the centralized and closed systems.
