About

Bonfiglioli is a family-run Italian company with a global presence. Its three business units, Discrete Manufacturing & Process Industries, Motion & Robotics and Mobility & Wind Industries, embody all the expertise and experience needed to support its customers' growth. Bonfiglioli designs, manufactures and distributes effective, tailored solutions for all types of applications in industrial automation, mobile machinery and wind energy.
Their solutions are based on a wide range of products, including gearmotors, drive systems, planetary gearboxes and inverters. Bonfiglioli solutions impact all aspects of daily life, from the food we consume, to the roads we drive on, the clothes we wear, and the light that illuminates our homes. Their solutions keep the world in motion.

Challenge

Bonfiglioli, a prominent player in the industrial automation and power transmission sector, utilizes high-value machinery that seldom fails. However, when such failures occur, the consequences include significant costs and extended downtime. The primary challenge for Bonfiglioli is the development of a comprehensive data collection and analysis system capable of monitoring the operational conditions and processes of their machinery. The lack of data regarding faults limits the company's understanding of the causes and conditions leading to these failures. This new system must accelerate the monitoring of industrial operations to minimize machinery operative damages (through the use of synthetic data or other innovative data sources) given the scarcity of real failure data. A consequent challenge involves the management of equipment and components within their machinery. These have a finite operational life and require replacement after a certain number of uses. The challenge lies in accurately determining the optimal replacement time for these tools to prevent premature disposal, which results in unnecessary waste, or delayed replacement overdue usage, which compromises product quality.

Objectives

  • Scouting a solution that can expedite the training of predictive algorithms for machinery and process damages, utilizing synthetic data and diverse data sources to compensate for the lack of failure data

  • Looking for solutions with TRL 6 - Technology demonstrated in relevant environment

  • Bonfiglioli is interested in collaborating with startups/scaleups to co-develop a PoC or to launch pilot projects together
