Maritime Spatial Planning Foresight Workshop

Location:Hall 2
  • MSP and Multi-Use

Marine/maritime spatial planning (MSP) has been under way inEurope for more than 20 years. The first European maritime spatial plan was elaborated and enforced here in the South Baltic Region (BSR). This was the extension of the spatial plan of Mecklenburg Vorpommern to the sea. This year we celebrate 20th anniversary of this event. However, MSP is very dynamic. It is in constant move in order to be able to cope with emerging challenges (such as climate change or biodiversity loss) and secure important societal values (e.g. blue justice, security and safety). Therefore it is necessary to summarize the existing BSR experience on development of MSP (identifying strong and weak features and key lessons learned) in order to capitalize on it and improve MSP effectiveness and usability in the future for sustainable development of the region.

What is the status in the Arena 4South Baltic region, how much is the MSP implemented and what are the needs and expectation until 2030/2040/2050?

- Brief intro on the MSP development in the South Baltic ( lessons learned from early plans and from transnational projects)

- Driving forces for MSP development 20 years ago– nature restoration versus blue growth

- Future driving forces of MSP in the years to come

- Main threats, opportunities and challenges (Project portfolio related to MSP: capacity for MSP, NESBp, MSP4BIO,MAlbepes)
