Research on liquid crystals, holography, and diffractive optics. Currently exploring the commercial viability of holographic material for reconfigurable optics.

About me

Alex Berdin is a researcher in the Smart Photonic Materials group at Tampere University, Finland. His expertise is in diffractive optics, holography and liquid crystals with a strong inclination towards applications in AR/MR/XR. He learned early on some of the ins and outs of the business world through his previous work as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research, and in entrepreneurship training by OPTICA and the Innovation Services of Tampere University. His current activities are aimed at commercializing PhD research results, which motivates him to pursue a career in industry or as an entrepreneur.

My organisation

A device for holographic printing that utilizes a digital holographic microscope integrated with a laser interference system was designed for the photopatterning of azobenzene-based holographic thin films. This device facilitates the rapid fabrication of diffractive optical elements in a single step. By superimposing multiple sinusoidal surface relief gratings, it is possible to create complex holographic topographies. These light-configurable topographies are advantageous for new metamaterials and applications, such as waveguide couplers used in near-eye displays. An example of its utility is the ability to combine gratings with different periods, allowing for the simultaneous diffraction of multiple wavelengths. In a dot matrix printing process, these topographies are constructed pixel by pixel, based on a reference image, to create large-area holographic elements.
