The Institute for Information Systems was founded in 2006 at the University of Applied Science Northwestern Switzerland as a fusion of the previous Institute of Applied Business Administration in Basel and the Competence Centre in Information Systems in Olten. Today, the institute employs over 50 persons, most of them being researchers who deal with problems in business, industry, and public administration.
The institute provides education, consultancy services, research and development at the interface of IT and business. Main research areas are e-business, e-government, e-learning, information and knowledge management as well as IT management and system engineering including simulation and optimization, and artificial intelligence applications.
The institute has extensive experience in independent and joint research projects supported by public funding provided by Swiss institutions and the European Community. Research projects deal, for instance, with information and knowledge management, with the improvement of business processes, and with the optimization in logistics and production. Various recent projects were related to Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing. Besides that the institute offers bachelor and master studies in information systems as well as certificates and diplomas of advanced studies.
