Gian-Luca Bona

He is member of its executive committee of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW), acts as a member of the SUPSI University Council, in Ticino as well as the Bundesanstalt für Materialien, BAM in Berlin and serves as member on different boards of directors in the private and public sector.

From 2009 to 2022, he was Director of Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, and Professor of Photonics at the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich and Lausanne. He also served in the ETH Board as representative of the Research Laboratories Empa, Eawag and WSL.

After completing his doctorate at ETH Zurich, he joined IBM. There he worked in various areas of research and development, both in Switzerland and in the USA, before taking up his position at Empa in 2009. His commitment is strongly focused on the transfer of knowledge and technology from science to innovation in industry.
