Hidraulic Modeling

Hydraulic modeling allows us to study the behavior of water overflowing a riverbed when there is a flood. It is carried out with models such as HEC-RAS to simulate the movement of water depending on factors such as topography, soil type and meteorological conditions. This modeling requires very accurate results, so very powerful machines are needed to model large areas. As a result, flood analysis is focused on the areas most vulnerable to these phenomena.

At The Weather Partner we combine this methodology to simulate past or synthetic episodes to detect and understand future floods and model the potential geographic areas affected.

In this context we have simulated a flood in the Villa River in Panama, specifically between the cities of La Villa de Los Santos and Chitre. In our dashboard it can be observed how a rise in the upstream flow results in an overflow of the river in transit.

With these results we can cross-reference layers of information to determine, for example, the population and infrastructure affected and establish alerts and risk thresholds. We work to ensure that early warning systems are integrated and easily interpreted to aid decision making in compromised situations.
