About

The present study is focused on irrigation in lands along the Spanish Levante Coast, and similar ones, located near the Mediterranean Sea, where existing aquifers are limited. In this region, small and medium farmers are forced to pay high prices for irrigation, which makes it difficult for their crops to survive. Now more than ever it is, essential to strengthen the fruit and vegetable market in Spain.

A proposed method involving, desalination from brackish well water has been prepared, due to the proximity to the sea, where saline concentrations, mainly sodium chloride, can vary, between 700 and 1200 mg / L, depending on specific location, 80% of farmers have cultivation areas of between 10 and 30 tahullas1. Therefore, they could solve and lower the price of a cubic meter of water with their own optimized system, EDR (reverse electrodialysis). As such, such a system could provide them with a daily flow of water sufficient for their harvests, and make them, independent from the current community irrigation system, if they so wish.

The results of this study demonstrate that the use of this method, as will be seen below, allows, under properly negotiated conditions, with the electricity distribution company, achieving a maximum cost of € 0.18, compared to € 0.48, which is the current cost of a cubic meter of water.

The result obtained is that the operation of the EDR system is totally profitable, even in comparison with reverse osmosis (RO), the most widely used system today. A comparative study is presented, but not in regard to the cost of installation. Hence, the purpose of this study is the dissemination of the method, so that demand increases and the difference respect to the RO decreases, and thus its profitability are optimized.
