Know-how in lithium battery recycling offered for research projects

Simon Hilgendorf

Head of Development at ACCUREC-Recycling GmbH

Krefeld, Germany

About

ACCUREC-Recycling GmbH is one of the first recycling companies in Europe that can recover lithium in high yields from LIB (Li-Ion) batteries for various applications.

Our technology is characterized by its market maturity. It is also the first in the EU to be able to separate lithium carbonate with a high degree of purity in addition to a cobalt, nickel and manganese concentrate. The market maturity and high purity of strategic metals are unique selling points compared to all other projects, most of which are still on a pilot plant scale. In addition, the CLIMA process (CO2-minimized recycling of lithium-ion batteries) is characterized by low power consumption, better economic efficiency and minimized need for operating resources compared to other processes.

Deactivation of LIBs is a new key process in upstream in terms of capacity and costs, the scalability of deactivation process is a crucial success factor. The quality of recycled black mass is determined by the upstream process.

Lithium separation from black mass requires a completely new approach. The scalability of the lithium recycling process is a crucial success factor.

There are thus stll many aspects for further investigation, in order to establish a functional recycling industry in EU. We are interested in joining relevant research projects. We already have experience in European projects.
Horizon, and other EU programmes with opportunities for projects in environment, raw materials, recycling and strategic metals are of interest.
