Have you ever come across design patterns that make you feel trapped in a poorly-designed mousetrap? The kind that seem to appear on every website you visit, like a birthday selector dropdown that defaults to 2023 or a date picker that displays a clock wheel? These patterns can be incredibly frustrating to deal with.

But fear not, in this talk, we will be examining these patterns more closely and suggesting better alternatives. We want you to have a seamless online experience, so we will be providing numerous examples and checklists to keep in mind when designing or building these features. We will delve into common issues such as difficult-to-use sliders, overly-restrictive password requirements, and disabled "Continue" buttons. Furthermore, we will also be examining other design issues such as poor inline validation, invisible tooltips, and broken filters to help you avoid these pitfalls.

We understand that it can be difficult to identify certain design issues, such as scrolljacking, so we will provide tips on how to identify these issues and avoid them. We'll also be touching on the problem of busyness and distractions, such as identifying buses and fire hydrants, to help you stay focused and engaged. Our goal is to give you the tools you need to create a seamless and enjoyable online experience for your users.
