About me
Dieter Rummel is the head of the Head of the AI-based services unit in the Directorate General for Translation (DGT) at the European Commission. His unit develops and maintains workflow and language applications.
The IT unit in DGT has a long-standing experience in the development of AI-based services (its flagship project, eTranslation, started in 2017) and is currently exploring and developing solutions that use generative AI. Since 2023 Dieter’s unit has managed the AI@EC Network, a vibrant community of over 3500 staff in the Commission set up to share knowledge in the field of AI and to identify and test promising use cases.
Dieter started his career in the development team for the European Commission's Euramis (European multilingual information system) project in 1995. The project implemented a large-scale translation memory database that is still used today by translators in the language services of the EU.
In 2000 Dieter joined the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the EU, where he was responsible for language technology, before heading its Translation Support Department. During his time at the Translation Centre Dieter managed the IATE project for the creation of a single, interinstitutional terminology database. IATE has been used by EU terminologists since 2004 as a common platform for collaborative terminology work. Its public site – iate.europa.eu – was launched in 2007.
My organisation
The Directorate-General for Translation translates texts for the European Commission into and out of the EU's 24 official languages, and a few others when needed. The department deals exclusively with written texts.
