About me
Niina Elomaa represents the Prime Minister’s Office in Finland and works as a terminologist in its Translation and Language Division with 75 other language specialists. The Division provides translation, language and terminology services to all government ministries in Finland.
Together with two other terminologists, Elomaa offers advice on terminology and language issues to translators and government officials. Elomaa’s main duties include terminology project management and the compilation of multi-lingual glossaries and guidance. Recent projects include the NATO Glossary (providing Finnish and Swedish equivalents to key English NATO terminology) and glossaries relating to legislative terminology and government reforms such as the health and social services reform.
Glossaries and guidance are intended to serve translators, officials and anyone in need of government terminology and are made publicly available in the Government Termbank Valter and on the government website. Within the framework of a bilingual country and the wider international context, Elomaa believes it is important to make efforts to ensure the use of clear, accurate and harmonised terminology in all relevant languages in the state administration. Elomaa is a member of the Terminology Working Group of the Conference of Translation Services of European States (COTSOES) and NATO’s Military Committee Terminology Board (MCTB).
