About
Juan José Arevalillo Doval has a PhD in Translation from the University of Malaga, an MA in Specialised Translation from the Institute of Modern Languages and Translators at Madrid Complutense University, and a BA in English Philology from Madrid Complutense University.
In the translation industry since 1980, he is the managing director of Hermes Traducciones y Servicios Lingüísticos. He reviously worked as a freelance translator and as a language specialist and localiser at Digital Equipment Corporation.
He is a lecturer and professional advisor for future graduates in translation studies at Alfonso X University, the International University of Valence, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Menéndez Pelayo International University and ISTRAD (the Higher Institute of Linguistics Studies and Translation) in Seville. He also works with other Spanish and international higher‑education centres.
He is a former vice-president and treasurer of the European Union of Associations of Translation Companies (EUATC), and is currently the EUATC Youth Ambassador, covering the gap between university and industry and helping new graduates to join professional world. He is also the chair of the Spanish Association of LSPs (ASPROSET).
He is the chair of the Spanish Committee for Translation Services at UNE (the Spanish standardisation ssociation), and one of the creators of the EN-15038 and ISO-17100 quality standards for translation services. He is also a member of the Spanish Committee for Terminology and Terminography at UNE and of ISO’s TC37 Committee for Translation Services.
