Protecting Human Rights with Human-Driven AI Language Solutions
The presentation showcases how Amnesty International’s Translation and Language Strategy Department leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance translation and terminology management. It details the dual role of machine translation (MT) at Amnesty, both as an assistive technology and a standalone application. Furthermore, it introduces ELSA (Enhanced Language Service Algorithm), an experimental LLM-driven tool for quality assurance. ELSA is designed to align with the specific language and nuances of human rights discourse, supported by AmnestyTerms, a multilingual human rights terminology database managed by the Language Resource Centre which facilitates concurrent online searches and streamlines editorial work. Overall, the presentation emphasizes the strategic synergy between AI and human expertise to enhance the quality and effectiveness of translations, thereby supporting Amnesty International’s mission to translate rights and transform lives.
