This session is your guide to navigating the world of volunteer translation. We will explore how to secure meaningful volunteer opportunities, where to find them, what to watch out for, and how to present yourself to make a lasting impact.

From platforms like Translators Without Borders, where you can support humanitarian efforts, to Tarjimly, connecting you with refugees and immigrants in need, this session will point you to places where your translation skills can make a difference. We will also explore options where you can volunteer to subtitle videos across various genres. Additionally, the UN Online Volunteers platform offers translation opportunities within international development and humanitarian projects. Understanding when to move on from volunteer work to seek paid opportunities is also essential, and this session will offer guidance on recognizing those signs.

Securing a role is just the first step. Understanding how to navigate your volunteer experience is key to making it worthwhile. Learn what to expect when you begin, including the importance of meeting deadlines, effective communication with project managers, and seeking out constructive feedback – for improving your current work and for shaping you into a more proficient translator.

To avoid common pitfalls such as overcommitting or selecting projects that do not align with your long-term goals, you will get insights into making informed choices that contribute to your growth as a translator.

This session will equip you with the knowledge and resources to take your first steps toward a professional translation career, opening doors to future opportunities where your skills can truly make a difference.
