About me
Physicist with an MSc in Lasers and Optoelectronics and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Porto University. He joined Texas Instruments (TI), Portugal in 1989, where he worked for ten years, in Failure Analysis as Engineer and Laboratory Supervisor. He worked in TI Dallas, TX, and Freising, Germany for extended periods. He owned a private technical consulting business, Prudente & Tavares consulting Ltd. He has an extensive track record in Optics and Image Processing and is currently Research Coordinator for Advanced Monitoring at INEGI. He started the SPIE Iberia chapter – Society for Photo-optical and Instrumentation Engineers and is also a founding member, serving on the board of both the Portuguese Optics and Photonics Society – SPOF – and the Portuguese Society for Fracture and Structural Integrity - SPFIE. He has been chair and co-chair in several international conferences. Dr. Tavares is a non-governmental expert (CnGE) with the European Defence Agency in CapTechs Materials and Structures, Ground, Air, Maritime and Optronics, and a former member of the Advisory Council for Aviation Research in Europe (ACARE) WG2 on Industrial Leadership.
My organisation
INEGI is an interface institute for technology transfer in the areas of Mechanical Engineering from Porto University, The Advanced Monitoring and Structural Integrity unit is dedicated to the development and implementation of structural monitoring from very high resolution interferometre based systems to image based sensing such as Digital Image Correlation or Active and Passive thermography. This R&D unit is also proficient in material and component mechanical characterization and testing from low, quasi-static strain rates up to medium and high strain rates, as well as ballistic testing.
