Improving grassland managment in European livestock farming systems through agroecology principles

Laurence Fontaine

Research Director and Project manager at Centre National d'Agroécologie

Angers, France

About

Our contribution to improving grassland management is built around the engagement of pioneers and innovative farmers from our networks, supported by various stakeholders in a living lab approach:

  • Monitoring and testing tools on pilot sites (on-farm experiments involving farmers): using sensors to track feed, dung, and soil (low-cost approach), and assessing animal health through pH-Redox and bioelectronic methods.

  • Assessing systems, including economic aspects and comparisons to regional benchmarks, and demonstrating benefits for soil, plants, animals, and the environment.

  • Documenting farm practices and sharing feedback from practitioners.

  • Engaging youth by fostering awareness among young and future farmers, supporting teachers, and documenting practices with students.

  • Accelerating the transition to agroecology by showcasing innovative practices (proving it's possible!), designing tutorials and MOOCs, and leveraging outreach through France’s leading agronomic YouTube channel (95K followers, 15M views: Ver de Terre Production) and our agroecology knowledge hub aailable in several langages (Triple Performance Wiki).
