About me

Biography

Mr J.A. (Jan) de Boer was appointed Mayor of Den Helder on 4 March 2021.

Before that, he was Mayor of the municipality of Buren (province of Gelderland) and Alderman in the municipalities of Landsmeer, Harlingen and Hoorn.

In those positions, he was responsible for public order and safety, regional cooperation, enforcement and measures to mitigate subversion threats, personnel and organisation, finance, road infrastructure, public health, spatial planning, the environment, services, economic affairs, social affairs, sustainability, and communication.

Between 2002 and 2006, he was a member of the city council and the audit committee of the municipality of Hoorn. Prior to 2006, he taught economics in secondary education.

He is also the author of a book devoted to the history of the Van Buren family in America: ‘Van boerenknecht tot president’ (English title: The farmhand and the president), Emjee Uitgevers, ISBN 978-94-90329-92-1.

Mr De Boer is 55 years old and an active member of D66, the liberal democratic party in the Netherlands. He is married and has three children.
