About

The Greater North Sea Initiative (GNSBI) aims to establish an intersectoral platform for the development of the North Sea region, fostering cooperation among the 9 bordering countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Its objectives include strengthening and renewing regional cooperation, based on lessons learned from previous experiences. The initiative aims to support maritime spatial planning (MSP) and implement efficient management processes. Furthermore, the platform is designed to be a space for cross-sectoral and cross-border knowledge sharing, fostering a better understanding of common challenges and encouraging close cooperation.

Another key objective is the promotion of a sustainable blue economy in the region, with a particular focus on offshore renewable energy and energy infrastructure. The initiative also aims to contribute to the protection and restoration of marine ecosystems in the North Sea, ensuring the health of this natural space while facilitating its sustainable use. This includes preserving marine resources and ecosystems for future generations, especially in sectors such as fisheries and aquaculture.
