The Greek State established the Ministry of the Aegean and Island Policy in 1985 by a unanimous decision of the Greek Parliament. In 2009 the Ministry of Aegean and Island Policy merged with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks. Since September 2010, the General Secretariat for the Aegean and Island Policy of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy is involved in the harmonization and adoption of governmental policies for the Greek islands.
The main objectives of the General Secretariat for the Aegean and Island Policy are:
- The implementation of policies envisaged for the sustainable development of the Greek islands.
- The immediate and effective suggestion to the Greek Government and the Prime Minister of the governmental measures deemed necessary in order to address and resolve the problems faced from time to time by island societies.
- The utilization and dissemination of the cultural heritage of the Greek islands.
- The formation of the Archipelago in a single area characterized by economic and social prosperity through the implementation of differentiated sustainable development strategies for each island.
The headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Aegean and Island Policy are located in Mytilene.
