About me

Melike Sarıçam graduated from Yeditepe University in 2013 with Third Place rank and Honour degree in Genetics and Bioengineering. She earned Erasmus scholarship in her placement year, which was at Human Genetics Department of Hamburg-Eppedorf University where she worked on a project involving several in vitro mammalian cell culture and genetic engineering techniques. During her Bachelor thesis, she studied to monitor bacterial death in the presence of nanoparticles via Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering. She completed an integrated PhD. Program in Biotechnology Department of Yeditepe University in 2019 with a High Honour degree. During her PhD, she worked as a researcher in a COST-Action project concerning development a novel technique to detect cytotoxicity caused by nanoparticle exposure by Surface-Enhanced Raman spectroscopy and then TUBİTAK 1001 project examining cellular response of gold nanoparticles functionalized with custom designed oligonucleotides, peptides and carbohydrates  in heathy and cancerous cell lines. In 2020, she took up a Senior Researcher position in TÜBİTAK MAM Diagnostic Technologies Laboratory and her interest lies in the behavior of development diagnosis kits within this, in particular, lateral flow immunoassay, colorimetric detection kits, magnetic nanoparticle based diagnosis kits and glucose sensors. She greatly enjoys the synthesis of environment-friendly nanoparticles and nanostructures to be used in theranostic applications and development of optic sensors based on Raman spectroscopy for chemical and biological agent detection, and wishes to excel in this scientific field in the future.

TUBITAK MARMARA RESEARCH CENTER (MAM) performs its operations in “TUBITAK MAM Gebze Campus” in the City of Kocaeli. The Center aims at becoming a world leader in science and technology production with its research, development and innovation capabilities widely shared by its Life Sciences Vice presidency, Materials Technology Vice Presidency, Energy Technology Vice Presidency and Climate Change and Sustainability Vice Presidency. TUBITAK MAM is one of the leading organizations of the advanced technology world thanks to its ability and capacity of research, research infrastructure and world class administrative and operational process management. With its customer oriented approach, it offers original solutions to public, private and military agencies and institutions. These solutions are materialized through basic researches, applied research and development, technology transfer, innovation, system and facility construction, national standard and norm setting, professional consulting and training activities.

VICE PRESIDENCY LIFE SCIENCES (VPLS) In parallel with the goals of TUBITAK Marmara Research Center, Vice Presidency of Life Sciences includes Industrial Biotechnology, Food Safety and Quality, CBRN Defense Technologies, Food Innovation Technologies and Medical Biotechnology research groups. Vice Presidency of Life Sciences is one of the world's leading research and development centers as an organization that can meet the needs of the age with its infrastructure equipped with advanced technologies and expert personnel in their fields.

The research groups under VPLS perform their research activieties with expert personnel and rich infrastructure in the fields of CBRNe Detection and Identification Systems, CBRNe Personal Protective Equipments, CBRNe Decontamination Products, Monoclonel/Polyclonel Antibody Production, Drug and Vaccine Design/Production, Toxicology, Enzyme and Fermentation Technologies, Plant Biotechnology, Food Processing Technologies, Nutrition and Functional Foods, Food Packaging and Preservation, and Food Safety and Quality. In addition, VPLS houses a modern Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3) infrastructure that allows for the systematic, controlled, and safe handling of pathogenic agents. In addition, there is also an Authorized Laboratory Animal Unit approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, which covers the breeding, use, and supply of animals including mice, rats, rabbits, and transgenic mice.

Our VICE PRESIDENCY accommodates wide variety of analytical instruments such as SEM, XRD, NMR, BET-(Surface and porosity), GC systems (GC-FID, GC-MS, GC-MS-MS), GPC, Spectroscopic systems (Raman, FTIR (DRIFT, ATR, transmission), UV-VIS-NIR), mass spectrometers (Orbitrap Q Exactive, ESI-QTOF, MALDI-TOF, LC-MS triple quadrupole), Zetasizer (particle size and zeta potential measurements), Hommade Analytical Test systems, FACS Fusion-cell Sorter and IN-VIVO Spectrum CT. For the chemical agent simulant tests of reactive nanomaterials and protective textiles a specially designed home-made test system with GC-FPD-MS analyzer is established in the characterization lab. Also fbiological part develops Antibody-Peptide-Nucleic Acid based diagnostic systems.

TUBITAK MAM has also involved NATO working group SET-292 “Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Defense Applications” on the detection of chemical threats.
