Dr Alex Vakaloudis works on and actively researchers Industrial IoT in the Nimbus Research Centre of the Munster Technological University (MTU). After gaining an MEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Thessaloniki, Greece, Alex completed his MPhil and PhD in Spatio-temporal databases at UMIST, Manchester in 1999. His next position was in the Politechnico in Milan for a one-year postdoc tenure and then worked in the IT industry in London building e-commerce, mobile and betting applications based on J2EE/Oracle. In 2006, he moved back to Greece where he taught as a part-time lecturer in the University of Macedonia while building server and web-based applications for health management, e-learning and IPTV.
At the Nimbus Technology Gateway in MTU for the last 12 years, he has delivered solutions on cloud support for IoT deployments, configurable predictive maintenance, test rigs for medical devices and innovation and ideation management among 100+ industrial projects.
Alex is a certified AWS Architect and has received funding from H2020. Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, Irish Research Council, Google and AWS. He leads the team of Software and Enterprise solutions with expertise in back-end and front-end development, relational and NoSQL databases, cloud computing (AWS Academy/Educate/Activate Programmes, GCP, Azure), machine learning and collaborates with the user experience and electronics teams at Nimbus towards producing full, end-to-end IIoT solutions.
The team has worked at the design and implementation of conversational agents for well-being, training (school/factory) and entertainment use cases on persona definition, dialog and work-flow specification and implementation using cloud and open-source frameworks
