About me

Dr. Esma Uflaz
Assistant Professor, ITU Maritime Faculty, Maritime Transportation Engineering

Dr. Esma Uflaz is an Assistant Professor at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Maritime Faculty, Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering. With a strong background in maritime operations, she has served as an oceangoing chief officer on various tanker vessels and later transitioned to shoreside roles, including Deck Superintendent. She has extensive industry experience in ship inspections, audits, safety processes, and operations for tanker vessels.

She holds an MSc in Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering from ITU, with research focusing on the efficiency of ISM procedures, and completed her PhD on “Simulator-based evaluation of human response in emergencies.”

Her research interests include maritime safety, human factors in maritime operations, maritime simulators, eye-tracking, risk assessment, decision-making, and maritime accident analysis. She has contributed to several international projects, including MarEd, SAFEMODE, and MariHEALTH. SAFEMODE HORIZON 2020 "https://www.safemodeproject.eu/"

Dr. Esma Uflaz is also a member of the organizing committee for the International Maritime Human Factors Symposium (IMHFS).
