I am an AI & medical imaging expert in 'Teaching' at Imperial College London. Seeking collaborations in digital health, AI diagnostics & smart healthcare.
Imperial College London is a globally respected institution dedicated to science, engineering, medicine, and business, with a strong focus on research, education, and innovation. The university provides students with a rigorous, research-led education, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to address real-world challenges.
The Department of Bioengineering brings together expertise from engineering, biology, and medicine to advance healthcare technologies. Teaching in the department is closely linked to ongoing research, ensuring that students gain practical experience in areas such as medical imaging, biomechanics, synthetic biology, and AI-driven healthcare solutions. The curriculum emphasises both fundamental principles and the latest technological developments, preparing students for careers in biomedical engineering, healthcare technology, and medical research.
Imperial also integrates artificial intelligence into education, enabling students to develop expertise in machine learning, computational modelling, and AI-driven medical technologies. Courses such as Reinforcement Learning for Bioengineers provide students with a strong foundation in AI-based decision-making and its applications in medicine and bioengineering. Through project-based learning, industry collaborations, and hands-on experience, students develop the skills needed to contribute to advancements in digital health, AI diagnostics, and biomedical innovation.
The university places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and industry engagement, ensuring that students not only gain technical expertise but also understand the broader impact of their work. Graduates from Imperial’s bioengineering programmes are well-prepared to contribute to healthcare, research, and technology development, making meaningful contributions to the field.
Dr. Faraz Janan is an experienced academic leader with a DPhil in Engineering from the University of Oxford, specialising in artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications in biomedical sciences.
Currently, Dr. Janan is the Senior Tutor and Senior Teaching Fellow in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London, where he teaches Reinforcement Learning - a branch of Artificial intelligence, and oversees student academic progress, well-being, and pastoral care for over 1,200 students. His main focus is on the integration of AI and XR in education. His research focuses on AI-driven diagnostics, medical imaging, and smart healthcare technologies, and he has contributed to high-impact publications and three patent applications. He serves as an Associate Editor for Nature British Journal of Cancer and reviews for journals such as IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging and Elsevier Medical Image Analysis.
In addition to his full-time role at Imperial, he is a part-time Senior Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) Cambridge, where he supervises research projects in AI and medical imaging.
Previously, he was a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Lincoln. He also held governance and leadership roles, serving as a Director and Governor of Lincoln University Technical College (UTC), one of the top institutions in the East Midlands and Lincolnshire.
Dr. Janan spent two years as a Medical Imaging Scientist at Volpara Health Ltd., an AI-driven medical technology company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, contributing to AI-based breast imaging solutions. He was also a Daniel Turnberg Fellowship to the Arab Academy in Egypt, a Visiting Lecturer to the University of Jordan, and a Visiting Lecturer to the Sichuan University in China.
