Production Employee Information Systems (PEIS)
About
The PEIS (Production Employee Information Systems) team focuses on the development of human-centric technologies that support production employees both physically and cognitively. The aim is to enhance sustainability and flexibility in the workplace by deploying smart, adaptive systems that can respond to operator needs in real-time.
This group’s work is structured into three main research tracks:
-
Context-Aware Cognitive Support:
PEIS develops and deploys digital work instruction platforms that adapt to the user’s context. This includes screen-based systems, augmented reality (AR), and smart wearables. These systems are designed to be interactive and responsive, using sensors, computer vision, and speech recognition to understand user intent and guide operations dynamically. -
Intelligent Physical Support Systems:
Research in this area focuses on sensing and control technologies to support workers ergonomically. The team designs systems that assess operator posture and workload to improve ergonomics and reduce strain, with long-term goals of integrating real-time monitoring and adaptive support systems. -
Human-Centered Workcell Design:
This track explores the integration of technology into the design and validation of production cells, ensuring that the workplace is optimized for human-machine interaction. It includes the development of methodologies for real-time feedback, adaptive task flow, and user-centered workflows.
A notable innovation from the PEIS team is CAD2Data, a software pipeline that translates CAD models into structured digital work instructions. This system enables the automatic generation of interactive instructional content and facilitates deployment across various devices, including AR glasses and smart displays. By reducing the time and complexity involved in content creation, CAD2Data has demonstrated significant reductions in training time and assembly errors.
Overall, the PEIS team plays a central role in making smart factories more inclusive and efficient by bridging the gap between digital technologies and human operators.
