Bahir Dar University, located in Ethiopia, is a prominent higher education institution known for its commitment to academic excellence, research, and community engagement. Nestled in the beautiful town of Bahir Dar at the shore of Lake Tana and Blue Nile River, Bahir Dar University (BDU) is established in 1999 by merging two former higher education institutions; namely the Bahir Dar Polytechnic (est. 1963) and Bahir Dar Pedagogy Academy (est. 1972). Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, under Bahir Dar University offers specialized programs in engineering, technology, and applied sciences, focusing on innovation and sustainable development to address local and global challenges. The institute is the oldest and well-known engineering and technology institute of Ethiopia. His imperial majesty, Haile Selassie I, with the support from the former USSR government established the institute in 1963. Currently, the institute enrolled more than 5000 students in 19 undergraduate and in 65 MSc and PhD programs. The institute works to attract international students, particularly those from Africa, and provide them with top-notch educational opportunities. The institute is giving more focus to marketable programs and research, one of the indicators is the establishment of BiT business incubation and techno-entrepreneur centre. Moreover, the institute is collaborating with various national and international organizations and educational institutions and engages in different research projects that have an impact on the country’s development.

About me

Muluken Zegeye Getie (PhD) is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering (energy/thermal specialization) at the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. He earned his Ph.D. in Energy engineering from Université Bourgogne Franche-Comté, France, in June 2021, an M.Sc. in Sustainable Energy Engineering from Bahir Dar University in 2014, and a B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering from Mekelle University, Ethiopia, in 2005. He teaches and advises graduate students while engaging in research and community projects focused on energy transition, energy efficiency, thermal refrigeration, solar energy, and energy management. He has published more than 35 papers in high-impact, peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings and 2 patents. In addition to his teaching and research, he has held various leadership roles at the university, including Faculty Dean, Research Director, deputy Scientific Director for research and Technology transfer at Bahir Dar institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University.  Additionally, he has served as General Co-Chair and Technical Program Committee Chair for the International Conferences on Advancement of Science and Technology, and as an editor for a Springer Material and energy book series. Since 2023, he has been elected as a distinguished member of EAI-European Alliance for Innovation for his contributions to smart city applications and future energies. He has participated as Co-PI in more than five national and international projects, including leading a project on the implications of cooking with electricity in Ethiopia.
