INEGI – Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) based in Porto, Portugal, focused on research and technology-based innovation activities, technology transfer, consulting and technological services, aiming to develop industry and economy in general. Our expertise comprises many areas, such as mechanical design, composite materials, biomechanics, health and sports, environment, advanced manufacturing, management, energy, among others.
The INEGI is located on the campus of FEUP, the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, which serves as a third party in a strong partnership with numerous consultants for biomedical research. In the vicinity, there are several faculties and polytechnic institutions, such as Medicine, Sports, as well as a nursing school, a health school, and other R&D entities for the health sector. Additionally, a second school of engineering is situated there, and many start-ups and labs are also located, creating a dynamic network for numerous projects.
For the health and sports sector, INEGI specializes in biomechanics, medical technology, sports, and occupational safety. We offer expertise in product development, prototyping (especially using additive manufacturing), and lab testing. Our skills include mechatronics, computational biomedical imaging, AI algorithms, experimental biomechanics, protheses/orthoses, medical devices, human performance, rehabilitation, and numerical simulation. As a tech transfer entity, we work closely with clients throughout the entire process, promoting collaboration among all project entities. INEGI actively participates in European projects, including the Horizon Europe Programme.

Health and Human Centricity Research Group
The group is composed by mechanical engineers, biomedical engineers, electronical engineers, Artificial Intelligence Engineers, and Human & Safety engineers. For defence, our activity focuses on: - Measurement and monitoring of physiological and cognitive state; - Optimisation of cognitive performance in human-machine interaction, including for human-robot teaming (collaborative robotics, smart wearables, exoskeletons,...); - Development of digital twins / digital tools for training. For that, we provide several competencies like: • Development of devices/technical solutions for medical rehabilitation applications; • Customised design of human-centred approaches for shopfloors, or healthcare institutes • Creation of physical and cognitive monitoring tools and wearables; • Design/optimization of sports equipment; • Human motion analysis in various contexts; • In-silico simulation and experimental validation of new materials, products, and/or algorithms; • Design of real-time monitoring tools or AI-based tools to support the treatment of health problems and risk mitigation;
