On 25 June 1892, the island was officially recognised as a health and seaside resort and, in the following decades, saw rapid tourist development.

Just out from the beach, an enchanting landscape accompanies you through the streets of the historic centre, the "Castrum", which contains ancient places, rich in history, where you can discover the art and culture of the place. Walking along the tree-lined avenues and alleys of the old town, the "calli" and "campielli", you seem to relive the atmosphere of times gone by, admiring the beautiful Art Nouveau palaces of the early 20th century, the mosaics of the early Christian basilicas, the stone houses of the "Castrum", the romantic sunsets on the dam and the colours of the fishermen's houses on the harbour.
