- For newcomers
In the fast-paced world of the language industry, staying competitive requires continuously updating your knowledge and honing your skills. Which skills are critical today, and which ones will shape your success tomorrow? What should aspiring linguists focus on first, and what can be learned later?
Dr. Oleksandr Bondarenko, with 24 years of experience in the translation and localization industry, will reveal the essential skills every modern language professional needs to build a successful career. Drawing from his extensive industry expertise and academic background, Dr. Bondarenko will provide practical insights on developing the competencies that future language industry professionals require. The presentation is based on three comprehensive studies on the core competencies of language professionals, conducted by the speaker over the past 12 years.
In his talk, Dr. Bondarenko will explore the importance of both traditional “hard” skills and the relatively newer “soft” skills. He will outline the role and priority of these skill sets in the portfolio of an aspiring linguist. Additionally, he will discuss the significance of technological competencies, service provision expertise, and the crucial skill of machine translation post-editing.
The presentation will also examine the roles of revisers and MT post-editors, highlighting their distinct skill sets and the specific competencies required for success in each role. Which texts are easier to edit — those generated by machines or humans? What truly distinguishes a human translation reviser from a machine translation post-editor? You’ll find answers to these questions and more during the session.
