Workshop 8 "EU Pilot Sites Strengthening Coastal Resilience"
- Coastal communities: resilience, challenges and opportunities
Coastal regions around the world face a multitude of complex challenges including, sea-level changes, extreme weather events, ecosystem degradation, increasing anthropogenic pressures, etc. To effectively address these and other related issues around the Atlantic, the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance agreed the following Coastal Resilience Action Area:
Increasing our understanding of the relationship between the ocean and climate and developing outcome-oriented science for mitigating and adapting to the consequences of climate change, particularly for the benefit of increasing resilience of coastal communities.
To implement this agreed priority, an All-Atlantic Network of Coastal Resilience Beacon Sites is being established to network locally managed coastal resilience sites that share a belief in community co-design, science and innovation as well as pan-Atlantic cooperation.
This session seeks to inform and invite sites in Europe to join this Network. Speakers are invited to share their experience on site-specific work being done around Europe promoting coastal resilience and implementing the goals of the EU Mission Ocean and Waters. Potential avenues for sharing these experiences with similar sites all around the Atlantic Ocean will be explored.
This session contributes to implementing the EU Mission Ocean and Waters, the EU Atlantic Strategy and the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance.
