• Origins of dubbing and subtitling: the early 1930s and the advent of talking film.

• Dubbing and subtitling, two very different ways to translate film and audiovisual dialogue:

  • dubbing: speech-to-speech adaptation, substituting the original dialogue and voices with different language(s) and voices;

  • subtitling: speech-to-text adaptation, inserting a written translation of the original dialogue within the image.

• The dubbing process:

  • technical steps before the translation / lip-synching adaptation / voice recording / sound mix;

  • the main two methods used in the dubbing world.

• The subtitling process:

  • spotting / adaptation under time and space constraints / “simulation” or rehearsal;

  • subtitling for cinema, television, and platforms.
