About

The GKinetic CEFA 12 (Clean Energy For All) is a free floating 12kW twin vertical axis hydrokinetic device which, with a suitable resource, can provide the equivalent power to 80kW of solar panels with 1/50th of the footprint.

Anchored like a boat and with a low profile, it can be deployed in hours and needs no civil infrastructure except an anchoring block and electrical cabinet. It has been deployed in an urban section of the river Shannon in Limerick City, Ireland with broad approval. Citizen and stakeholder engagement was carried out in collaboration with the +CityxChange project (https://cityxchange.eu/)) throughout the design life of the device. This has led to it being accepted for installation in an EU designated Special Area of Conservation. A major factor in its acceptance by not just the public but also regulatory authorities, is its negligible environmental impacts. This has been independently verified by Queen's University of Belfast's Marine Research Lab, with a patented control system which allows maximum power extraction at a turbine Tip Speed Ratio of >1, posing no danger to aquatic life.

Delivered as 4 components, it weighs under 2 ton and can be assembled in less than an hour with minimal training and equipment. Depending on resource this device can provide energy at a LCOE of 11-44c/kW and it is 95% recyclable at the end of its life.

We are now actively looking for suitable commercial pilot projects to demonstrate the technology so if you have a potential site in mind please get in touch.
